Carsten Nicolai “rota”

28 September 2019 to 26 January 2020

We are presenting Carsten Nicolai’s light and sound sculpture “rota” in the glass hall. “rota” is an oversized “dream machine”, an instrument whose light impulses affect our emotional world directly: a large, smoothly polished stainless steel cylinder rotates around its own axis. The perforations in its surface create white, stroboscopic, flickering light reflexes that radiate into the outside space, connecting the museum and the public urban space to form an artistic test laboratory.

The great innovator Carsten Nicolai (*1965) works on the boundaries between art, science and technology. For him, immaterial phenomena like light and sound are sculptural materials that influence our brain activity directly. As a musician under the pseudonym of “Alva Noto”, Nicolai is one of the most innovative representatives of electronic music. His works have been exhibited worldwide since he participated in documenta X (1997) and the Venice Biennals of 2001 and 2003.

The K21 in Düsseldorf is simultaneously presenting Nicolai’s works in the exhibition “Parallax Symmetry” from 28 September 2019 to 19 January 2020.
