Masterpieces of Expressionism

Eminent artists like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, August Macke, Otto Mueller, Emil Nolde, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff or Heinrich Campendonk saw expressionism as a departure into a new age. Many works created in the spirit of that time are regarded as uncontested masterpieces today. The Lehmbruck Museum owns an excellent collection of expressionist works including, even though the focus of the collection is on sculpture, a number of paintings of the period.

The works of the artist groups “Blauer Reiter” and “Brücke” can be admired in the exhibition rooms in the so-called museum annex. The exhibition will feature works by around 20 artists, including sculptures by Oswald Herzog, Franz Marc, André Derain, Bernhard Hoetger and Rudolf Belling.
